7 ways to over depression

Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to do what you need to feel better. Depression, gives you sleepless nights, you can’t think straight and sometimes you can’t control your emotions. But while overcoming depression isn’t quick or easy, you can’t just will yourself to “snap out of it,” but you do have some control. The key is to start small and build from there. Feeling better takes time, but you can get there if you make positive choices for yourself each day.

Depression can be a very difficult burden to bear and it can be very frustrating to live with depression. Depression makes you feel uncomfortable and restless. The key to depression recovery is to start with a few small goals and slowly build from there. It pays to keep yourself busy, that way your mind is occupied. Draw upon whatever resources you have. You may not have much energy, but you probably have enough to take a short walk around the block.

Am no doctor, but these are ways that can also help you overcome depression without taking those happy pills. Depression can weaken you and make you feel very unhappy. Usually, there is a reason for unhappiness such as being rejected or not getting what you from life, like not fulfilling your dreams or goals, keeping secrets from those you care about can also lead to depression. The burden and the weights of secrets can be very depressing especially when it affects you and those you are keeping it from. It’s almost as if you are in a black tunnel with no light. And the things you used to find enjoyable become tedious .

1 Sleep

Getting the right amount of sleep is healthy for our body and mind. Some argue that sleep deprivation treats depression, but I don’t buy it. It’s one thing when you are too busy with work and deprive yourself of good sleep, it’s another thing to deprive yourself because you think so much that your thoughts weighs too much on you and causes you sleepless night. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Don’t work late or do other stressful activities that cause your mind to race. Remember a tired body and quiet mind are the requirements for quality sleep. Inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being. Studies have shown that even partial sleep deprivation has a significant effect on mood. Take steps to ensure adequate sleep, this will lead to improved mood and well-being.

2 Exercise

If you’re physically capable, then trying exercising. its a very strong way to overcome depression. A 10-minute walk can improve your mood for two hours. The key to sustaining mood benefits is to exercise regularly.Walking, swimming, dancing, yoga, and cycling or stationery biking are good choices. Start slowing, don’t overdo it. Regular exercise has benefits for helping to overcome depression. Besides lifting your mood, regular exercise offers other health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, protecting against heart disease, cancer and boosting self-esteem. you can also go to the gym or pick a more suitable way to exercise.

3 Socialize

Involve yourself with close friends and family. The thought of reaching out to even close family members and friends can seem overwhelming. You may feel ashamed, too exhausted to talk, or guilty for neglecting the relationship. Remind yourself that this is the depression talking. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness and it won’t mean you’re a burden to others. Your loved ones care about you and want to help. And remember, it’s never too late to build new friendships, if you don’t have friends. It’s not hard to make friends if you put the time in. Everyone wants to be heard, appreciated, and loved. Start off by listening, appreciating and loving, and it will come back your way.

Getting the support you need plays a big role in lifting the fog of depression and keeping it away. On your own, it can be difficult to maintain perspective and sustain the effort required to beat depression, but the very nature of depression makes it difficult to reach out for help. While isolation and loneliness can trigger or worsen depression, maintaining emotionally close relationships can be instrumental in overcoming it.  Spend time talking and listening face-to-face with trusted people and share what you’re going through. The people you talk to don’t have to be able to fix you; they just need to be good listeners. Ask for the help and support you need. Socializing with friends and family, will help improve your mood and also improve your self-esteem.

4 Challenge negative thinking and talks

Negative thinking can be very challenging to stop, especially when you are depressed. Depression puts a negative spin on everything, including the way you see yourself, the situations you encounter, and your expectations for the future. But you can’t break out of this pessimistic mind frame by “just thinking positive.” Happy thoughts or wishful thinking won’t change it. Rather, the trick is to replace negative thoughts with more balanced thoughts.

Depressed people tend to see the world in a negative way. When things go wrong they blame themselves and when they go right, they put it down to luck. Depression reinforces self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness. Monitor your inner negative talk and make allowances for this type of thinking by reminding yourself that your thinking is that of a depressed person, not a healthy functioning person. Don’t take your thoughts seriously when you are feeling low. Acknowledge the thoughts but this doesn’t mean you have to believe them. Keep perspective. You can also hang out with positive friends, Notice how they always look on the bright side, when dealing deal with challenges, even minor ones. Then consider how you would react in the same situation. This help take control of what you think and say.

5 Do things that make you feel good

To help overcome depression, you have to do things that relax and energize you. This includes following a healthy lifestyle, learning how to better manage stress, setting limits on what you’re able to do, adopting healthy habits, and scheduling fun activities into your day. You can’t force yourself to have fun or experience pleasure, but you can choose to do things that makes you happy and lightens your mood. You can pick up a former hobby or a sport you used to like, if you don’t feel relaxed with a new one. You can express yourself creatively through music, art, or writing. Go out with friends. You can take a trip with your friends, a day trip to the movies, the zoo, or the museum. Push yourself to do things, even when you don’t feel like it. You might be surprised at how much better you feel once you’re out in the world. Even if your depression doesn’t lift immediately, you’ll gradually feel more upbeat and energetic as you make time for fun activities.

6 Write in a Journal

Writing in a journal, is a very good way to handle depression. This could be an escape but it doesn’t have to be. You can write about the way you feel, express yourself in the journal and don’t hold back anything. You can write about what’s going on, and let your thoughts carry you through to a solution. Many great books were written by people who were, at least at the time, going through a period of pain and suffering. Open up to your journal, like you will open up to a therapist. Write whatever is boarding you and making you unhappy. Another good way to use a journal, is to write at least five things down every day that you are grateful for. This encourages you to think more positively and can help to remind us that things are never that bad. This is also a good way to overcome depression.

7 Stay strong

Don’t give up, depression can make you want to hide away from the world and disappear. It can make you loss hope and sometimes you feel there no point of living. It’s okay to take some time out but give yourself a time limit and then do something productive to improve your mood. Depression can be well managed (I know this from personal experience) and there can be a wonderful life beyond depression. Hang in there and keep the faith. Seeing a Doctor to chat over any symptoms is a step in the right direction. Just be strong and know that every problem has a solution, even when there no solution, there is always a better option. Suicide is not the answer as many will think, don’t run away from your problem, stay strong and you shall overcome.
